May - a dance around the maypole
Traditionally, a young tree was cut down and stuck into the ground; villagers danced around it to celebrate the end of winter. In time, this took the form of a Maypole with gaily coloured ribbons attached, which children would skip around making beautiful plaited patterns around the pole.
